Did You Know?

Cotton Is Bad For Your Hair!!

Many things you use on a daily basis is made out of cotton. Think about your clothes, blankets, towels, and pillowcases, they’re all made of some type of cotton/polyester blend. This is because cotton has many great qualities! It’s soft, lightweight, and really good at absorbing moisture. Although it can be beneficial to have these qualities, it may be slowly and secretly causing long term damage to your hair and skin.

Let’s think about it. Our hair needs moisture to stay healthy and cotton absorbs moisture. So to save it, we shouldn’t be putting cotton items near our hair, but that’s easier said than done. When you sleep at night, you could lay your head on a cotton pillowcase, which could be 7-8 hours of consistent contact with cotton. In addition to that, the moisture the pillowcase absorbs from your skin and hair stays on that pillowcase until you wash it again. Even if you wear a bonnet to sleep, those hats and hoodies are usually lined with cotton waiting to dry your hair out. It’s so hard to escape this in the winter, which is the season most people experience dryness.

Of course I’m bias because once I found out that cotton causes dryness, I try to limit my hair’s contact with cotton items. I bought a satin bonnet, pillowcase, and I started bringing satin scarves with me to places when I know I have a hoodie or when I have to wear a hat. Small changes like this lead to big outcomes for me and my clients! A lot of problems my clients had all connected back to lack of moisture in the hair. Things like breakage, lack of movement, itchy scalp, or even slow growth could all be under the “lack of moisture” umbrella. In conclusion, cotton is bad for your hair. Moisturization is important for our hair and we should try our best to limit how often cotton touches it.

Tips to Maintain Moisture:

  • drink more water/eat more fruits and vegetables

  • use leave in conditioner/hair lotion

  • use moisturizing shampoo

  • deep conditionings/hot oil treatments/hair masks

  • invest in satin lined hats and hoodies

FYI!!!

I sell satin bonnets, pillowcases, and hair bags.
